Fractional GC and Counsel Services: Your Outside In-House Counsel

The Smarter Way to Work with Lawyers

What is a Fractional GC?Start-ups and growing businesses frequently require regular legal guidance, whether to protect their intellectual property (IP) or navigate complex business transactions. While external counsel can be helpful, the costs can be substantial, and hiring a full-time General Counsel (GC) may not be economically feasible for smaller companies.Enter the Fractional GC. This model brings in-house legal expertise on a part-time or flexible basis, tailored specifically to a company's needs. A Fractional GC offers a distinct advantage over traditional external counsel. While external counsel excel in specific legal areas, a Fractional GC brings a more general legal and business-centric approach. They have experience dealing with the challenges faced by growing businesses and can provide practical advice that goes beyond just legal technicalities. Fractional GCs can help develop strong IP strategies to safeguard valuable ideas and inventions, mitigate against risks, and offer guidance on legal aspects of contracts, partnerships, and other strategic transactions, all while understanding the pain points you might encounter when working with external counsel. They deeply understand your business goals, similar to a full-time GC, and achieve specific legal goals you define, and you can determine the length of their engagement. The flexibility of this model allows you to have access to legal support at your fingertips, without the high cost normally associated with the practice of law.

Meet Jasminder - Evercounsel Founder and Fractional GC

Who is Jasminder? A lawyer? Yes. An IP strategist? Yes. An in-house executive? Yes. But he wouldn't list those as his primary attributes. He is a son, husband, father, brother, and a friend to an amazing and talented group of people with a variety of backgrounds. He considers himself more a technology nerd and businessperson than a lawyer. He just happens to be a Legal and IP Ninja, knowing some things about law and IP. Jasminder has spent over 15 years working with startups and understands the highs and lows, the requirements of running successful businesses, and the appropriate role law and IP play in supporting and growing such businesses. He has worked with Canadian and U.S. private and public companies on several interesting business cases including leveraging IP for capital fundraising, strategic collaborations, licensing and other cross-border matters. He helped Titan Medical (TSX: TMD; Nasdaq: TMDI) establish its U.S. operations. He also led licensing efforts with Medtronic PLC (Nasdaq: MDT), and served on a steering committee for the successful development of robotic surgery technologies. Further, he led Titan's efforts in licensing its patent portfolio to well-established medtech companies, including Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG), Medtronic and Auris Health, part of J&J Medtech (NYSE: JNJ).Get in touch!
